As a kid, it was a big thing to attach a towel around my neck and act like Superman. It was always fun to pretend to have super powers. One day, when I was about six years old, my older brother told me that if I started off high enough, then I could fly. Being young and trusting, I believed him. After all, he was my older brother; he wouldn’t lie to me.
We climbed up the TV antenna and got on the top of the house, positioning ourselves at the edge of the roof. We were directly above the kitchen window and my mother was standing at the sink washing the dishes. She had no idea that we were up there. Without hesitating, I jumped off the roof, arms outstretched in front of me, fully expecting to take off in supersonic flight. Unfortunately, the only flying I did was straight down.
Imagine my mother, washing dishes, minding her own business, when she suddenly sees her six year old son streak by the window and slam into the ground belly first. She claims that I actually bounced after impact. Shocked and in a panic, she bolted out the back door and ran to me. Surprisingly, I was unhurt, except for the breath being knocked out of me. Apparently, I was so sure I was going to fly that my body was completely relaxed when I hit the ground. Good thing!
The Bible teaches that faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you cannot see. Well, I had faith that I was going to fly! I was sure I was going to fly!! I was certain I was going to fly!!! But I still ended up doing a belly flop onto the cold, hard ground. Obviously, the Bible is talking about having faith in God... not your older brother.
